Quote Analysis steps
1. MLA HEADING ON THE LEFT CORNER WRITE:

2. TITLE:
Title of text, Chapter # (pg start – end)
3. INTRODUCE YOUR IDEAS AND QUOTE:
a. A topic sentence indicating an observation or assertion about the text or passage – in one sentence introduces the reader to what your point is gong to be.
In Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck uses animal imagery when describing Lennie to give the readers a better idea of his thought process.
b. Write the quote in proper format
“Lennie dabbled his big paw in the water” (Steinbeck 4), the animal imagery is Steinbeck’s way of showing the reader he has an intellectual disability, describing his size and establishing his innocent nature.
4. ANALYSIS REQUIRES AN EXPLANATION OF YOUR IDEAS, CONNECTIONS, AND INFERENCES - any of these:
a. Explain what it means, bring your analysis of the passage back to the significance of the text (this can be a specific part or the whole text).
b. Consider what is said, how it is said, the words used, the imagery and descriptions.
c. Look at the structure (short, long?), purpose (why include that information), audience (who is this information for?) etc., contribute to the meaning of the passage or the text as a whole.
5. OFFER A CONTEXT FOR THE PASSAGE WITHOUT OFFERING TOO MUCH SUMMARY, 1-2 SENTENCES MAX.
OPTIONAL - only if necessary for analysis. I’ve read the book, if you have to summarize then your not showing comprehension of the ideas.
6. CONNECT DQ TO THE THEMES (THEME IS A PHRASE/SENTENCE – THE UNDERLYING MESSAGE IN A TEXT) – PLEASE SEE THE CLASS WEBSITE AND YOUR NOTES FOR A LIST OF THEMES FOR EACH TEXT.
IF NEEDED, CHOOSE 2 OR MORE FROM #7-12 TO ADD TO YOUR ANALYSIS
